Aggressive Mesothelioma Treatments — Part 3 of 3

As our Maryland asbestos attorneys continue to discover more treatment options for mesothelioma sufferers, we decided to put together a three-part series of aggressive treatments that are becoming available.

The procedure that a research team at the Oxford University Centre for Respiratory Medicine have been testing is a purposeful lung collapse prior to performing a thoracoscopy. A thorasoscopy is a procedure performed in order to take biopsies and monitor the lining surrounding the lungs of a patient suffering from mesothelioma. It is minimally invasive and requires only a local anesthetic. However, in patients that do not have a lot of fluid in their lungs, this procedure is more difficult and may require a patient to undergo a full surgery with general anesthesia.

The Oxford research team has been experimenting with collapsing the lungs of those that have little fluid in their lungs and then performing the thoracoscopy. They have found that 87% of the patients they tested this procedure on were able to have the thoracoscopy without general anesthesia or a more invasive procedure, so the results have been very positive.

This procedure may be encouraging for mesothelioma sufferers as it will allow for more minor procedures to be performed without painful, aggressive surgeries. It is still in the testing phase, but may be put in regular practice in the near future.

How Can Our Maryland Asbestos Attorneys Help?

Mesothelioma is an incurable form of cancer that is caused by exposure to and inhalation of asbestos fibers. Asbestos has been used in multiple commercial applications for over a century, but was found to be dangerous in the 1930s. After many employers were warned about the dangers, they still didn’t take the necessary precautions to protect their employees. This is considered negligent behavior and, if you contracted mesothelioma because of it, you have grounds to file a lawsuit.
