Poor Sleep Linked to Increased Mesothelioma Tumor Growth

Poor Sleep Linked to Increased Mesothelioma Tumor Growth

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that occurs when a person is exposed to asbestos particles. The cancer typically attacks the lining of the lungs, heart, abdomen, and in rare cases, the testicles. There is no cure for mesothelioma so the symptoms are treated individually.

The symptoms of mesothelioma can include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Pain in the chest
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Abdominal pain
  • Swelling
  • Unexpected weight loss

Because there are so many symptoms of mesothelioma, oftentimes a variety of medications and treatments will be prescribed. All of these in combination can sometimes cause insomnia in mesothelioma patients.

The University of Chicago recently performed a study in lab mice that had been injected with tumor cells. In mice that had their sleep interrupted on a regular basis, the tumors grew twice as large as those that had undisturbed sleep.

This study serves as a reminder to mesothelioma patients to get good, healthy amounts of sleep and to discuss your sleeping habits with your doctor.
