CDC Gives $2.2 Million to Mesothelioma Tissue Bank

Mesothelioma doctors, researchers, and patients are relieved to discover that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reversed their earlier decision against funding the National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank (NMVB). The decision reinstates a 2-year $2.2 million federal grant to the NMVB.

The NMVB was founded in 2006 and is the sole federally funded program that focuses specifically on mesothelioma research. It makes mesothelioma tissue samples available to researchers everywhere. The hope is that sharing the samples and the information gleaned for studying them will lead to better mesothelioma treatments and, hopefully, a cure.

Mesothelioma is a cancer that attacks the lining of the heart, lungs, and abdomen. It can also attack the lining of the testicles in rare cases. There is currently no cure and the disease is hard to diagnose because it mimics the symptoms of several other conditions. The information gathered and discovered from work done on samples from the NMVB are helping to increase the life span of those diagnosed with mesolthelioma. It is also helping to diagnose the rare cancer quicker.
