What is Photodynamic Therapy for Mesothelioma?

What is Photodynamic Therapy for Mesothelioma?

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an experimental mesothelioma treatment. It is also used in treatment of other cancers.

Mesothelioma treatments depend on the stage of cancer. Treatments may include:

•    Surgery
•    Chemotherapy
•    Radiation

These treatments come at a considerable expense. Treatment may prevent you from working, and it can lead to significant physical pain and emotional suffering. Many asbestos job sites and manufacturers have brought these costs upon millions of people by exposing them to asbestos.

With PDT, cancer cells are killed with laser light. A few days prior to the light therapy, a special intravenous drug will be injected into the bloodstream. The drug makes cancer cells react with the light, ultimately eradicating the cells.

Results of studies looking at the effectiveness of PDT in extending survival have been mixed. The success of the treatment may depend on the type of mesothelioma, the stage and the exact combination of procedures. You should speak to an oncologist if you are interested in learning more about the photodynamic therapy.
