What Types of Products Can Contain Asbestos?

What Types of Products Can Contain Asbestos?

If a product contains 1% or more asbestos, the Environmental Protection Agency considers it an asbestos-containing material (ACM). There are hundreds of products in daily use that contain asbestos fibers. Because of its effectiveness as an insulator, asbestos has most often been used in products requiring temperature resistance. However, its flexibility and durability also led to it being used extensively in the automotive and shipbuilding industries until the 1970s.

Some of the most common asbestos-containing products include:

  • Cigarette filters
  • Plastics
  • Vinyl products
  • Electrical cloth
  • Automotive parts
  • Insulation materials
  • Fume and laboratory hoods
  • Textile garments and cloth
  • Fire-proofing and prevention materials

Asbestos is also common in construction products, such as adhesives, duct connectors, drywall taping compounds, gunning mixes and mastics, and more.
