Vitamin E May Inhibit Mesothelioma Cell Growth

A new study done by researchers at Toyo University Graduate School of Life Sciences shows that a form of Vitamin E may help limit the growth blood vessels that feed mesothelioma tumors.

The version of Vitamin E that the researchers were working with is called T3E and other studies have shown that it has anti-cancer properties. In this particular study, the researchers were attempting to use T3E to inhibit the protein that supplies oxygen to new blood vessels. If these blood vessels are being exploited to provide oxygen to the cancerous mesothelioma tumors, then stopping the oxygen flow to them could kill or shrink them.

The team attempted using T3E to target the cancerous cells from within the body, rather than attacking them from the outside. By creating a low oxygen environment for the cancerous cells, the tumors released their growth proteins encouraging the growth of new blood vessels. The cells were then treated with T3E, resulting in the tumors losing the blood vessels that kept them alive.

Further study and testing is needed, but this treatment may be a breakthrough in ways to treat mesothelioma or slow down the progression of the disease.
