Aggressive Mesothelioma Treatments – Part 1 of 3

After hearing some new and interesting pleural mesothelioma treatment options, our Baltimore asbestos attorneys at The Law Office of Brown | Kiely, LLP decided to write a 3-part series describing them.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive and incurable form of cancer that can attack the lining of the lungs, heart, abdomen, and testicles. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma and it attacks the lining of the lungs. Mesothelioma is caused by the inhalation of asbestos, which is a heat-resistant mineral commonly used in insulation, roofing materials, and many other professions.

Aggressive Treatment #1

A treatment that is available for those suffering from pleural mesothelioma is a surgical option called a Pleurectomy/Decortication (P/D) surgery. This is not a very common procedure because it is so involved; however, it is becoming more common as it is proving to lengthen the life of patients suffering from pleural mesothelioma.

A P/D surgery is performed in two rounds – the first of which is the complete removal of the lining around the lungs. The second procedure is the removal of all tumors growing within the chest cavity. The great advantage of this procedure is that a patient can keep their lungs, rather than try for a transplant. Additionally, the removal of all of the tumors in combination with chemotherapy and radiation helps extend a person’s life expectancy and improve their quality of life.
