Where Can Asbestos Exposure Occur?

Where Can Asbestos Exposure Occur?

Since asbestos was once such a commonly-used building material, exposure can occur in a wide range of settings. However, there are certain occupations, job sites, and locations that come with a uniquely high risk of exposure. The most common situations where asbestos exposure can occur are:

  • Product use – Because asbestos fibers are extremely resilient and resistant to heat and fire, they have been used in products like drywall, insulation material, floor and ceiling tiles, paint, cements, and more.
  • Occupations and job sites – Electricians, firefighters, auto mechanics, and drywall tapers are all occupations that involve risk of asbestos exposure. Additionally, exposure can occur at many workplaces that use asbestos in their facilities, such as shipyards, power plants, and even schools.
  • Environmental – Mining or a natural disaster can release asbestos fibers into the air, creating an environmental risk outdoors. For example, California’s Clear Creek Management area and El Dorado Hills community are home to some of the most extensive naturally-occurring asbestos deposits.
  • Military – Until the 1970s, asbestos was used inside of ships, aircraft, submarines, and other vehicles, mostly for insulation purposes. Many military veterans have suffered asbestos-related illnesses years after their service.
