Targeted Tumor Treatment May Help Mesothelioma Sufferers

The Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa has announced a new clinical trial for pleural mesothelioma sufferers. In the trial, rather than sending chemotherapy throughout the entire body, the chemotherapy will be directly targeted at tumors.

The trial will make use of an X-ray technology known as an angiogram to determine which blood vessels are supplying the tumors, allowing them to continue to grow. Then, the physicians will target those blood vessels with aggressive rounds of chemotherapy.

This is expected to keep tumors from growing and the physicians involved are hopeful that it will increase life expectancies and improve the quality of life for those with pleural mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a terminal form of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a compound that has been used in commercial and industrial applications for over a century. As early as the 1930s, the government warned employers that asbestos exposure could have harmful side effects. However, many employers ignored these warnings and didn’t protect their employees from asbestos exposure.
